Minister Tim Loughton MP endorses 99% Campaign and IARS Youth Policy Group response to Positive for Youth consultation
Following the Positive for Youth consultation response drafted by the IARS Youth Policy Response Group earlier this year, Department for Education Minister Tim Loughton MP requested a meeting with IARS and its young people to talk about the response’s recommendations and the 99% Campaign.
The Minister gave his support for most of the suggestions that the Youth Policy Response Group made. Crucially, one recommendation that came from the Group’s response was to reconsider the lack of a separate paper on equality and diversity, which the Minister said had been rectified as a result. Talking about the National Citizens Service, IARS supported the principles behind the programme. In particular, we agreed with the premise of giving young people from different backgrounds the opportunity to mix. However, where there was disagreement was over its prescriptive nature, the lack of preparatory programmes and a problematic and potentially unfair commissioning process.
Three of IARS’ volunteers, Tosin, John and Sakib also debated a number of current youth concerns with the Minister. In particular, the Minister explained how he didn’t think the August disturbances were actually riots per se and that we need to learn from the places where the riots didn’t take place. The volunteers agreed to some extent, but were also keen to point out the role that social deprivation had as a motivating factor for people’s actions.
Finally, the Minister strongly expressed his support for the sentiment behind the 99% Campaign – that of dispelling negative stereotypes about young people. Below is a picture of the Minister holding a 99% Campaign poster.
