New internships at IARS: apply now

Want to be part of the IARS team? We are pleased to announce that we have five new 3 month part-time internship opportunities at our London office:

Each role is designed to challenge the intern and allow them the chance to gain an insightful introduction to life within an international think-tank. The positions will offer rich and high quality experiences that will enhance future job prospects. You will be able to claim up to £150 in expenses to cover your costs.

IARS is a leading think tank with a  mission to give everyone a chance to forge a safer, fairer and more inclusive society. We do this by producing evidence-based solutions to current social problems, sharing best practice, and by supporting young people to shape decision making.

Job title: Communications Intern

Internship description

You will support the Programme Director in steering the direction of the IARS Youth Voice Journal. This will include assisting with editing, coordinating submissions for our next edition and exploring advertising options. You will also assist with the distribution and sale of the journal, which will include making contact with distributors, publishing houses and universities and managing online sales. You will also support the social media activities of the organisation including developing IARS’ use of Twitter, Facebook and IARS’ website.

Requirements

  • Position would suit a graduate/postgraduate with an interest in academic publishing;
  • Some experience of editorial work;
  • Good written, oral communication skills;
  • Experience in publications desirable;
  • Empathy with the aims and objects of IARS;
  • Capacity to develop a strong overview of IARS’ work;
  • Work well independently;
  • Able to take a proactive approach to undertaking further, relevant tasks independently.

Start date: ASAP

Days/ hours to volunteer: 1-2 days a week (flexible) and able to attend a Wednesday team meeting on a monthly basis.

Duration: For 3 months with possibility for renewal.

Expenses: Up to £12 a day.

Benefits: Training in the form of staff seminars, personal development plans, CV review scheme, guaranteed interview scheme when paid opportunities become available.

Job title: Fundraising Intern

Internship description

You will support the IARS team in developing fundraising campaigns and appeals. The role will involve exploring alternate fundraising options for the organisation, such as time-banking and corporate sponsorship as well as supporting our relationship with our members. There will be opportunities to expand the role and for you to develop new fundraising campaigns.

Requirements

  • Position would suit a graduate/postgraduate who is looking to pursue a role in fundraising or someone seeking commercial experience;
  • Good IT skills, particularly excel and website content management systems;
  • Good written, oral communication skills;
  • Work well independently;
  • Able to take a proactive approach to undertaking further, relevant tasks independently
  • Capacity to develop a strong overview of IARS’ work;
  • Empathy with the aims and objects of IARS;

Start date: ASAP

 Job title: Policy Intern

Internship description:

You will support the Research and Policy Coordinator in keeping the organisation up-to-date with policy and legislative changes that impact on young people and the youth-led sector. You will lead on the publication of one of IARS’ newsletters, which focuses on include criminal justice, restorative justice, youth policy, citizenship, human rights, EU, equality and other issues that might affect young people.Other duties will include attending and participating in internal IARS meetings and other relevant meetings and to carry out additional tasks which may be required from time to time under the direction of the Director.

Requirements:

  • Position would suit a graduate/postgraduate with an interest in social policy;
  • Knowledge of social policy issues and of processes of policy development;
  • An interest in young people’s participation in civic life;
  • Empathy with the aims and objects of IARS;
  • Work well independently;
  • Capacity to develop a strong overview of IARS’ work;
  • Good IT skills and be able to conduct thorough online research;
  • Good written, oral communication skills.
  • Able to take a proactive approach to undertaking further, relevant tasks independently.

Job title: Research Intern

Internship description:

You will lead on the analysis of a large quantitative data set collected by a group of young research volunteers at IARS. With the support of the Research and Policy Coordinator, you will interpret the data and establish key findings from this piece of youth-led research into youth crime on public transport. The research specifically set out to explore young peoples’ preferences for reporting mechanisms when they experience intimidating behaviour on their journeys home from school. You will work with the Research and Policy Coordinator to write up the final research report which will be published as an article in IARS’ peer reviewed Youth Voice Journal, for which you will be a credited author. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to a presentation on the findings at IARS’ annual event at Middle Temple in September. Other duties will include attending and participating in internal IARS meetings and other relevant meetings and to carry out additional tasks which may be required from time to time under the direction of the Director.

Requirements:

  • Position would suit a graduate/postgraduate with a quantitative research background.
  • Sound knowledge and experience of using SPSS (or other quantitative analysis tools), Excel for data analysis or SurveyMonkey (or similar online survey software) for data analysis.
  • A proven knowledge of approaches to quantitative analysis;
  • Experience of applying knowledge of quantitative analysis to practical situations of data analysis;
  • An interest in social policy;
  • Empathy with the aims and objects of IARS;
  • Work well independently;
  • Good IT skills and be able to conduct thorough online research;
  • Good written, oral communication skills.
  • Able to take a proactive approach to undertaking further, relevant tasks independently.

Start date: ASAP

Days/hours to volunteer: 1 - 2 days per week

Duration: For 3 months with possibility for renewal (up to six months)

Job title: 99% Campaign intern

Internship description:

You will support the youth-led 99% Campaign acheive it's aims of challenging negative stereotypes of young people by: helping support the organisation of the 99% Campaign Board, which consists of high profile individuals; promote the Campaign through the use of social media  and keep track of trends in London press.

Requirements:

Position would suit a graduate/postgraduate with an interest in journalism and campaigning;
Empathy with the aims and objects of IARS;
Good IT skills and ability to administer a blog using a content management system;
Work well independently;
Good written, oral communication skills;
A keen eye for spotting errors.

Days/hours to volunteer: 1 - 2 days per week

Duration: For 3 months with possibility for renewal (up to six months)

Expenses: Up to £12 a day
